More About Me

About Me

Hello! My name is Markus (he/him), and I grew up in the old but charming city of Mainz, Germany (whose history dates back to 12 BC!). This is where I spent my entire childhood together with my two sisters. At the age of 8, my father got me my first personal computer: a chunky tower running Windows 95. Looking back, this is when my love for technology started.

Next to Germany, I have lived in Sweden and Ireland before settling in beautiful Vancouver, Canada, which I now call home. It was in Vancouver where I discovered my calling for the outdoors: summers are spent hiking, camping, backpacking, biking, and surfing. In winter I switch to snowshoeing and snowboarding. Running and bouldering are two favourite activities that I do all year-round with my partner.

My Experience

Experience

After finishing my Master's degree in computer science, I started my professional career in the field of data science. Back in Germany, I was part of a research and development team that developed a patented rapid diagnostic test for glaucoma. In this group, I took on the role of the data scientist and developed a machine learning system able to detect glaucoma based on antigens extracted from teardrops.

After a jump across the pond, I continued working in the data field in Vancouver, Canada. As a data analyst, I focused my efforts on geographic information systems and developed tooling to process, transform, and standardise geospatial data on a large scale. This undertaking laid the foundation for my next career move. As a Product Manager, I was responsible for the so-called Location Services Platform and launched a number of location awareness features which powered millions of customer experiences globally.

I eventually grew into the role of a Senior Product Manager at a tech startup with series B funding in the renewable energy space and was responsible for two product areas: Analytics and Data Platform. There, I partnered with software engineers, data scientists, and designers to continuously iterate on our product and launch new features. Soon after, I headed up the product team as Director of Product. In this role, I scaled and matured the product organisation and set out product direction and business strategy.

Fast-forward to today, I have shifted my focus to software development and want to continue creating great products using my experience, technology mindset, and coding skills.
